An Enjoyable Read

As always, David Childress has presented an entertaining, enjoyable read. Though perhaps not as much in-depth detail as Graham Hancock's The Sign & the Seal, Childress nevertheless delivers an interesting, well-illustrated book. Fast reading, as are all the other books I've read by him. (PS - The publisher must've gotten a better quality of proofreaders, as I only counted 5 typos in this particular book. Others have literally dozens!)

The Many Mysteries of the Ark

I was shown this book by the author himself shortly after it was released. I have read many books by David Hatcher Childress, and consider him the "Real Life Indiana Jones," and of course, what was the film character Indiana Jones searching for? The Ark of the Covenant, of course! It's about time David Hatcher Childress wrote this book.
This book takes a look at the historical origins of the Ark, as well as the many mysteries, myths, and magical properties of the "Holy of Holies" that may be the greatest artifact from antiquity -- for all of times!

Straddling 1947

The British experience in India is a subject that has been given thorough literary treatment during the past century, and most of these books have tried to highlight some aspect of the cultural contrast between east and west. E.M. Forster's "A Passage to India" is perhaps the most comprehensive of these, but Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's "Heat and Dust" makes an admirable effort to contribute to the Forsterian legacy by updating the milieu to a post-independence setting while keeping one foot firmly in the past.

The novel concerns a young English woman, the narrator, who arrives in Bombay intending to make it her home for a while and to reconstruct the story of the doomed marriage of her grandfather, a law officer named Douglas Rivers, and his first wife, Olivia, from a collection of intriguing letters that Olivia had written to her sister Marcia. From the beginning Jhabvala splits the novel into two parallel narratives, alternating between the Riverses in 1923 and the narrator in India fifty years later, who presents her adventures, thoughts, and reflections in the form of a journal.

Olivia Rivers is a bored housewife who has little to do besides playing the piano and chatting with the other British officers' wives until she becomes enamored with the charming Indian prince, called the Nawab, who governs the district Douglas serves. A living emblem of amoral corruption and aristocratic gluttony, the Nawab dwells in an ancestral palace that arrogantly overlooks the wretched slums of the neighboring town and supports an entourage of servants and sycophantic companions including an effeminate Englishman named Harry. Jhabvala employs these elements to shape a dramatic arc that leads from extramarital attraction to adultery and finally to Olivia's disgrace following an ugly scandal for which she could never be forgiven back in England.

The narrator's analogous existence within the pages gives the novel an even broader context; she too falls in love with an Indian man, although a much humbler one, a meek clerk named Inder Lal. She also observes that India is a magnet for Europeans in search of a certain spirituality that they have failed to find in Western religions; in particular she meets a young Englishman who has become a Hindu ascetic, calling himself Chid, but who cannot handle the hardships of a land of such disease and poverty. The novel's title refers to the general climate of the region of which the narrator writes, a scorching exacerbation of the hopeless squalor in which the vast majority of the population lives.

I am aware that Jhabvala has written screenplays based on classic novels, including Forster's, for the Merchant-Ivory film team, and I confess that I somewhat expected "Heat and Dust" to be a pastiche of Forster, but I was pleased to find that Jhabvala, although like Forster a lucid and elegant prose stylist, has a distinctive literary voice, specifically in her shrewd eye for the particularities of Indian culture. From the suttee stones, morbid monuments to Hindu widows who have immolated themselves in their husbands' funeral pyres, to the British cemeteries memorializing the soldiers fallen in the 1857 mutinies, "Heat and Dust" is a valuable tour through 1920s and 1970s India.

A Powerful, Beautifully Written Novel Of Two Women & India

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's powerful and beautifully written novel of an "outrageous" Anglo-Indian romance in 1920s Khatm and Satipur won the Booker Prize in 1983. The author has crafted parallel tales of two young women, distantly related and separated by two generations. Anne, the story's narrator, travels to India to discover more about the mystery surrounding her grandfather's first wife, Olivia.
Douglas Rivers, an upper echelon English civil servant, married and brought his adored wife, Olivia, with him to India in 1923, during the British Raj. She was a beautiful, spoiled and spirited young woman, who found it difficult to adjust to life in the British colonial community of Satipur. Feeling suffocated by the inbred group she was forced to socialize with, Olivia longed for independence, intellectual stimulation and a more passionate life. She hoped that a baby would solve her problems but found it more difficult to become pregnant than she had thought. Shortly after their arrivel in India, Douglas, Olivia and some of the more important members of the community were invited to the palace of the Nawab of Khatm and she was immediately intrigued by the handsome, charismatic prince. He courted her friendship aggressively and then the friendship turned passionate. When faced with a crisis Olivia was forced to make life altering decisions which would have far reaching effects and cause scandal throughout British India and England that would last for generations.
Anne stays in the town where her grandfather and Olivia lived fifty years before. Trying to piece together the puzzle that was Olivia and discover what motivated her to change her life so drastically, Anne visits the places her "step-grandmother" frequented and interviews people who knew her or knew of her. She also reads the letters and journals that Olivia wrote so long ago, and oddly enough, Anne ventures into experiences similar to Olivia's adventures, but more acceptable in our modern time. Anne's spiritual and sensual journey in the 1970s parallels Olivia's as the color, heat, exotic landscapes, and people of India penetrate her western upbringing. Anne writes in her own diary: "Fortunately, during my first few months here, I kept a journal, so I have some record of my early impressions. If I were to try and recollect them now, I might not be able to do so. They are no longer the same because I myself am no longer the same. India always changes people, and I have been no exception."
This short and delicately written novel packs a powerful punch and paints an extraordinary portrait of British colonials in India, with their sense of cultural and moral superiority over the local population. However, even more compelling and unusual, is the story of two women, generations apart, who follow similar paths under the spell of India.

Jhabvala's book, Heat and Dust, is set India, in two eras - the 1920's and the 1970's. The two time periods are brought together through the narrator. She has journeyed to India to research the life of her grandfather's first wife, Olivia, who left him to marry an Indian prince. The narrator chronicles her own Indian adventures while telling the reader what she has learned of Olivia. The device of using the journal is very well done, and allows the reader to see how the lives of these two women intersect in very profound ways.
The descriptions of India throughout the book in both eras were amazing and very evocative, both of the individual eras and of the landscape.
While technically very well written, I did not find the book fully enjoyable. I did not feel as though the characters of either of the two women were fully fleshed out, and I found this distracting throughout the book. Many of the minor characters were even less well developed, and this made them seem like little more than stereotypes.
While not the best book I have read recently, it is short and a quick read, and worth the time.

Excellant Review material

Couldn't be more please with the pace and structure of this book. This volume is very structured and concisely ties together the material into a well researched discussion. Not an in-depth start-from-scratch read. Use this if you need a thorough wrap-up of the material. Definitely worth a look.

Don't let this Fool you - Very. very high level review book only

I like the light, high level review in this book. If only the CISSP let you off this easy.

I have not taken the test yet, but all the practice tests go way, way into details that this book never gets near. I used CISSP Exam Cram Practice Test book which is very good and the ISC2 paid tests so far.

I read the whole Shon Harris and Eric Conrad books and even those miss 10% of the stuff that I see on practice tests.

Do not rely on this book as thorough prep but only as a high level review to be used after you've slogged through several months of intense studying with the authors I mentioned above.

Rapid Review means Rapid Review

People don't realize that this book is just meant to be a review of key concepts. It's not a sole study source but I think it makes a great supplement when used with a book like the CISSP: Certified Information Systems Security Professional Study Guide from Sybex, that goes in depth on the related concepts. This book is for the final push prior taking the certification exam. So, don't buy this book as the only study source for CISSP, this is a complement or a suplement on your study diet. Good luck!

Really wonderful, touching.

I loved this story, the author Lindsay Townsend brings you into a wonderful world, you can feel it, love the characters in all their various foibles, its a love story with so much more. I wont give any away, but I highly recommend this wonderful story, its depth astounded me as well as how well written it is, and makes you really care, and unable to put it down page after page.

A Magic Medieval Romance

The Snow Bride (BookStrand Publishing Romance)

The Snow Bride features handsome but battle-gnarled warrior knight, Magnus, and magic warrior Elfrida. After being initially repelled by his appearance, the beautiful red-haired Elfrida, who is equally handicapped in the romance department by being a witch, falls in love with the gallant Magnus. They set out together to recover Elfrida's virgin sister from the clutches of a bride stealing monster wizard. Their complimentary talents eventually combine to overcome the tyrant and achieve a happy ending. The mystical elements are integrated perfectly into the medieval weft with good and evil equally balanced most of the time, the former triumphing in the end. The couple's ordeal is played out mainly in snow which gradually seeps into the readers conciousness along with many other dark vibes, sounds and smells. The sense of place is powerful and the reader does feel completely immersed in the medieval culture of peasants and lords, played out in hovels ,palaces and dark woods, where religion and magic are part of the same heady brew. This is an excellent read for lovers of the genre and an eye opener for modern minds closed to the ancient possibilities of the unknowable.

The Snow Bride

The Snow Bride is a lovely title, and snow figures largely throughout the story which makes for chilly yet picturesque reading.
Set at the times of the Crusades, from which Sir Magnus returns scarred so horribly that young maidens run from the sight of him, his destiny directs him to Elfrida, the witch of the woods who is so feared by her neighbours that no man will speak to her, let alone marry her.

Elfrida's sister has been snatched by the Forest Grendel, a misshapen creature of whom grotesque tales abound in the neighbourhood. Elfrida's sister isn't his first victim. Elfrida hatches a cunning plan with herself as bait, hoping that she can use her magic to overwhelm the creature. Magnus finds her tied to a tree in the woods, and rescues her - and she's not at all grateful! Indeed, she thinks Sir Magnus may be the misshapen beast!

It's an engaging story, and I particular liked the character of Magnus, so accepting of his fate and yet still brave and willing to help Elfrida find her sister. How they do, will keep you reading right to the end of the book.

Divine Comedy

This is a fantastic edition of the Inferno. It is the 1st time I've ever read the Divine Comedy besides excerpts attempting to ape the terza rima. While such exerpts are gratifying the way a 3rd generation video tape of a movie may be, it is far more fullfilling to read a 'literal' representation of the Italian text in English and then frame that within the borders of the original Italian. Singleton's notes are also exceptional and lead to a very complex reading of the text. In short, for someone who cannot speak a word of Italian but wants to have the richest reading of the text, from language to content to the culture the poem draws upon, this is the text to purchase. When I complete the Inferno I plan to complete the rest of the Dante's masterpiece with Singleton holding my hand.

CHARLES SINGLETON's translation of Divine Comedy

I capitalize CHARLES SINGLETON because amazon.com pile their customer reviews into one long list, admitting no differences between translations. SINGLETON's very literal prose best serves the reader who would read the original Italian, and clarify his reading by referring to the facing English translation. You needn't have studied Italian for this, though some skill in another Romance language is very helpful. But if you insist on getting your terza rima secondhand, read Pinsky's Inferno(Pinsky has yet to bring over the Purgatorio and Paradiso).

"Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself in a dark wood, where the right way was lost..." Those eerie words open the first cantica of Dante Alighieri's "Inferno," the most famous part of the legendary Divina Comedia. But the stuff going on here is anything but divine, as Dante explores the metaphorical and supernatural horrors of the inferno.

The date is Good Friday of the year 1300, and Dante is lost in a creepy dark forest, being assaulted by a trio of beasts who symbolize his own sins. But suddenly he is rescued ("Not man; man I once was") by the legendary poet Virgil, who takes the despondent Dante under his wing -- and down into Hell.

But this isn't a straightforward hell of flames and dancing devils. Instead, it's a multi-tiered carnival of horrors, where different sins are punished with different means. Opportunists are forever stung by insects, the lustful are trapped in a storm, the greedy are forced to battle against each other, and the violent lie in a river of boiling blood, are transformed into thorn bushes, and are trapped on a volcanic desert.

If nothing else makes you feel like being good, then "The Inferno" might change your mind. The author loads up his "Inferno" with every kind of disgusting, grotesque punishment that you can imagine -- and it's all wrapped up in an allegorical journey of humankind's redemption, not to mention dissing the politics of Italy and Florence.

Along with Virgil -- author of the "Aeneid" -- Dante peppered his Inferno with Greek myth and symbolism. Like the Greek underworld, different punishments await different sins; what's more, there are also appearances by harpies, centaurs, Cerberus and the god Pluto. But the sinners are mostly Dante's contemporaries, from corrupt popes to soldiers.

And Dante's skill as a writer can't be denied -- the grotesque punishments are enough to make your skin crawl ("Fixed in the slime, they say, 'Sullen were we in the sweet air that is gladdened by the Sun, bearing within ourselves the sluggish fume; now we are sullen in the black mire...'"), and the grand finale is Satan himself, with legendary traitors Brutus, Cassius and Judas sitting in his mouths. (Yes, I said MOUTHS, not "mouth")

More impressive still is his ability to weave the poetry out of symbolism and allegory, without it ever seeming preachy or annoying. Even pre-hell, we have a lion, a leopard and a wolf, which symbolize different sins, and a dark forest that indicates suicidal thoughts. And the punishments themselves usually reflect the person's flaws, such as false prophets having their heads twisted around so they can only see what's behind them. Wicked sense of humor.

Dante's vivid writing and wildly imaginative "inferno" makes this the most fascinating, compelling volume of the Divine Comedy. Never fun, but always spellbinding and complicated.

Although ethnic politics is not the Achilles heel of the People's Republic of China as it was for the former Soviet Union, it is an important and multifaceted set of issues that necessarily command the attention of China's leaders. Ethnic China presents a dozen well-crafted, thought-provoking, and well-balanced chapters by Chinese American scholars on a broad range of issues relating to ethnicity. They reveal a gap between rosy official depictions of a harmonious, ethnically well-integrated society and a rather grimmer reality in which rapid economic development is not a panacea for all the problems that exist in the multi-ethnic society of contemporary China.
