Hwang and Horowitt suggest that Silicon Valley is an innovation ecosystem they liken to a rainforest—hence, the book’s title. Thinking of Silicon Valley as a living biological system “helps innovators ‘tinker’ together in the same way that atoms ‘tinker’ together in natural biological systems ... Excellent Travelogue - Explains the culture of Silicon Valley

This is a readable and well-reasoned book which describes why so many attempts to replicate the success of Silicon Valley in other locations fail. Often policymakers simply park some venture capitalists next to a research university and expect a new center of innovation. The Rainforest shows that you cannot produce the success unless you understand and replicate the culture.

Understanding "what goes without saying" is critical to succeeding in any new environment, and the authors make explicit the implicit assumptions that govern behavior among startups, venture capitalists, and large corporates in the Valley. The authors pull from multiple disciplines and integrate a varied set of research and real-world observations to weave an explanation for how and why Silicon Valley works. This makes it an excellent travelogue for those new to the Valley or visiting it - anyone entering startups or venture in California should read it. It also is indispensable for those policymakers and practitioners who want to create innovation ecosystems in other locations in the US and in other countries.

Insightful

As a legal practitioner who likes to think he is familiar with the VC industry, I thought the book provided a really unique and compelling insight and analysis of the nature, drivers and future of innovation - things we sort of know are fundamentally important, but that we often just accept without much thought. The book clearly benefits not just from deep first hand industry experience that the authors draw on, but also from their ability to relate much of that, anthropologically and otherwise, to what motivates people and communities to innovate and to other real world examples. There's a ton of books addressing innovation, including with a VC theme, but this one added a fresh perspective, particularly with respect to trying to understand and anticipate future innovation trends and clusters.

Touches the core of innovation--the human element

This book delves into the core of what spawns true innovation--or rather innovative environments--the human element. Innovation is not defined by technology or scientific discoveries or brilliant ideas. It is true that these elements are essential components of the process, but they are far from sufficient. A successful innovation culture requires people, people from all walks of life, all backgrounds and expertises--people are the glue that hold it all together.

This book speaks to changes in culture, in the importance of lowering social barriers and alterations of perspective that are required to bring about the extensive (and often prohibitively difficult) collaboration that is necessary to create self sustaining innovative environments. It challenges ideas that innovation can be "engineered" from the top down and rather presents it as an organic growth, a symbiosis of tacit social contracts. True innovation comes from maximizing serendipity, it cannot be predicted, it cannot be engineered, but its conditions can be fostered. This book will change your perspective on how to enter into collaborative environments, how to interact with diverse parties, and how to change your attitude and behavior to benefit a system (and consequently yourself) that spawns truly revolutionary innovations.

No Access Code!!!

Anywhere else that you purchase this book brand new, the access code is provided for access to the website. However, Amazon leads you to believe the access code comes with the book through the description but it does not. I was extremely upset because I needed the website for the course I was enrolled in. The access code alone is 75 bucks. Without the code, the price is ridiculous.

Arnold Barton has selected thirteen of the numerous essays  he has published over the past forty years on the history of Scandinavia.

This is a companion volume to Barton's The Old Country and the New, an essay collection on Swedish emigration and the Swedes in America. Included here are studies of the special significance of the eighteenth century in Sweden's history and culture, the relationship of King Gustaf III to the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, the impact of the American Revolution in Sweden, and Gustaf III's ambitions in the East Baltic region. Also detailed are the king's early reaction to the French Revolution and his efforts to organize a European coalition to crush it, a reassessment of the reign and internal reforms of Gustaf IV Adolf, and the Swedish succession crises of 1809 and 1810.

In addition, Barton examines the increasing tension between the Pan-Scandinavian movement and the rising Finnish national movement. He deals with the historians of the Danish Agrarian Reforms of 1784-1814, parallel developments in Finland and Norway between 1808 and 1917, the discovery of Norway abroad, Swedish national romanticism, and Sweden's transition from a warfare state to a welfare state, now exemplifying the rational and humane ideals of the twentieth century.

Essays on Scandinavian History highlights important topics in the history of the Scandinavian region, which has remained all too little known outside the Nordic lands themselves, while also offering broader perspectives on Europe since the mid-eighteenth century. Twelve keyed-to-text illustrations, a bibliography of Barton's publications on Scandinavian history, essay endnotes, and an index augment this work.

About the Author

 

H. Arnold Barton is a professor emeritus of history at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His books include, among others, The Old Country and the New: Essays on Swedes and America, A Folk Divided: Homeland Swedes and Swedish Americans, 1840-1940, and Sweden and Visions of Norway: Politics and Culture, 1814-1905. He holds an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University, was made Knight-Commander of the Royal Swedish Order of the Polar Star in 2000, and was named Swedish American of the Year in 1988 by the Royal Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Vasa Order of America.

A brief but useful look at photographic technique

While the book was shorter than I expected it did provide some useful tips for taking sharper photos. Some things are so obvious but you just don't make the connection until you see them in print. Shutter speed for instance, I've always kept in mind that the minimum shutter speed for hand held photos really should be 1/40 or so but I didn't connect this with fuzziness in pictures of my 4 year old daughter until this book suggested a minimum shutter speed of 1/100 to freeze her quick jittery movements. Back button focus was a completely new idea to me that seems like a good practice as well.

I would have liked this book to go over the basics of fine tuning the autofocus of your lenses which I came across after finishing this book. Also note that this book is written for users of Canon DSLRs so it does take a little effort to translate if you shoot Nikon.

Not Worth the $10

I was hopeful for this book to improve my photography. Unfortunately, this book seemed more like a collection of short blog posts that were unhelpful to me as an intermediate photographer. The information I read in this book was at a very beginner level. It may be good for someone starting out, but all the information contained is common knowledge that can be gained by reading reputable photography blogs.

It would have been more helpful to see more photo examples of the techniques James shared ie: here is a photo using back button focus, here is one without; here is a photo using AF-C, AF-S, etc

I would have been willing to pay $3-5 for this book. The length and information contained was not worth the $10 paid.

Tack sharp for beginners

This is a book about the very basics of setting your camera. Very little of use that is not known by any one who even scans their owners manual. You can get better information off any web site on sharp pictures. Only Half of the pages contain any information and the pages are very brief. Overall a book for beginners.

Book 1 of this trilogy I truly enjoyed and I got so excited when I found out that book 2 is live. Off The Ice is what I would like to think a book that readers of this trilogy is anticipating. We got to know the characters and how they made up in book 1 but in this story, we see em growing as mature individuals and how their relationship grew since book 1. It was nice to know that they are moving forward and that their life as individuals is progressing. But the good thing is, they are helping each other through and through but by the end of the book, their future is a bit blurry because Levi is off to his professional hockey dream & Presley will be left behind.

I like the fact that there is less drama in this book. I mean, when it comes to Levi & Presley. They are stable & emotionally secure with each other and I like reading stories with that kind of feel.

I can’t wait for book 3 and what future holds for em. :)

Reads more like an infomercial, but some great nuggets of information

This book goes over how to set up online businesses using social media, webinars and other click-advertising methods to generate a stream of income, while not investing much at all of your own capital. Stay-at-home moms who need income, those with underpaying jobs, or no jobs are going to be very interested in what Mark Anastasi has to say.

However, the style of the book (a lot of hype about how the author and others live the "good life" --luxurious vacations, thousands of dollars a month pouring into checking accounts, getting up late, not commuting to an office, living offshore in a less-expensive tropical location) sound more like an infomercial and indeed, the author is suggesting you take one of his seminars.

The good news about this book is that the information is gathered conveniently into one place. The bad news is that you probably can get this yourself if you study online enterprise, and meanwhile you have to wade through the fluff and sales pitch. I will say, that doing all this research yourself online is time-consuming and you do get a number of ideas here (ebooks, informational websites that pay per click, webinars, referral sites) as well as a concise list of opportunities for earning a living with a web-based business.

I am giving the book three stars because a lot of what is in here is true, at least for the current year 2012, and if you are wanting to branch out on your own, start a business with a minimal startup cost, this could be very helpful. I just didn't enjoy the writing; too much anecdotal come-on, hype and cheerleading, too little meat and potatoes of information. You'd need more than this book if you are serious.

The primary purpose of 'Laptop Millionaire' is to get readers to sign up for his more expensive products, such as $40 software, but much more focused on his $2,000 and $5,000 seminars (plus travel, room and board). I also noted that all the testimonials are authored by others in the 'get rich quick and easy' business. The book is really just an infomercial, with very little of value.

Gotta give PROPS for a really good book on making money online

This book lays out all the popular sales channels (as of 12' april) to earn big money sitting in your underwear at home using popular sites such as facebook, twitter and such.

I mainly picked up the book for more tips to increase my ebook business and I ended up learning more than I thought I would.

If your looking for the most current ways to make money online "at least until a new crop of sales channels open up" this book will satisfy your needs.

It lays out the endless potential in accessing billions of consumers all over the world and then actually shows you how to tap into them.

Update...it is June 1 2014 and I'm still referring to this book. The author should follow up with a training series. There really is some good advice in the book. Gonna start licencing that I learned about...good stuff..just changed from 4 stars to 5
