The world and it's economics is more global today than it was 10 years ago. Products and goods are being shipped and received from country to country more than ever before. In this global process one key person that is needed is a Freight Broker and his or her service. Freight Brokerage firms are more in demand now than ever before.

My name is George A. Stewart, I am 43 years old, I worked 12 years as a store manager for Burger King Restaurant, a truly dead end job. Just like most jobs in the market today I used to put in plenty of hours that unfortunately, did not translate into money. I understand that everyone has bad days at work; for me it was not an ordinary occasional dissatisfaction but a genuine mismatch. Working for long hours and under constant stress was taking a toll on my health and to make matters worse I was earning $36,500 per year, which was barely enough to feed myself, my wife and three children. Most of the time, I felt like I was dangling from a cliff. My turning point was the day I met a certain customer in my restaurant who seemed to be doing very well despite the hard economic times the whole country was going through. After a little chitchat, I found out he was a freight broker and that he was earning a decent living while working a few hours.

At that point I did not know anything about freight brokerage or that a profession like that even existed. I therefore decided to do some research about it and the more I learned the more my interest grew and within a matter of weeks I was completely hooked up. Before I knew it, I took time off work to begin my training in freight brokerage.

After my training, I decided to quit my job at burger king and took up a job as a freight agent working under an established freight broker. My job included looking for new clients, taking orders and matching shippers with carriers. In one year or so I felt that I had enough experience and contacts to start my own firm. I then applied for the required licenses at FMCSA and started small.

Starting my own firm was definitely not easy but I found it much better than working at Burger King. My first client was a contact I had made from working as a freight agent. After a lot of hard work I finally started getting more clients, and in 6 months I could finally relax because my business had finally taken off. I was earning around $120,000 every year, which, I must confess, was really good for starters.

Now that I can work for fewer hours per day, my stress level has gone down and health wise, I am on the road to recovery. I can take better care of my family and also spend a lot more time with them. In this book, I outlined every steps about How to become a successful Freight Broker that anyone can understand and follow.

Very Very Basic

I've spent 14 years in the transportation industry, 3 years as a broker/agent. This book covers the basics but not near enough info to go out and open your own brokerage for sure. It offers the nuts and bolts but there is ALOT more to it than what is written in these 74 pages.

Believe me when I say OJT is the best way to learn this business, not a book. This book offers some generic information and suggestions about the business otherwise it would be as thick as an encyclopedia. Can you make money as a freight broker or agent? Absolutely. Is it easy? Absolutely not. You have to pay your dues like anything else worthwhile but if you have thick skin and persistence like the author says the sky is the limit.

The author mentions in page 7 once he did his research on the freight industry he went for broker training and off he went. He never mentions where he went for this training. His mention as a mgr at Burger King for $36,500/yr before getting into brokering was all of one paragraph and never brought up again so the book sub-title 'My Journey from a Fast Food Mgr to Freight Broker' really wasn't any 'journey' in the book.

Almost word-for-word I noticed some pages described the freight broker business just exactly as Entrepreneur Magazine described in their manual How to Start a Freight Broker business. Coincidence? Highly doubtful.

The transportation industry has it's own 'lingo'. If you can't speak the language or have any idea what a trucker is talking about when he says he's bob-tailing or he's over on his tandems you'll have a difficult time in this business until you're familiar with alot of the terminology. How much weight can a trucker legally have on his tandems do you know? Or on his steering axle? If you're clueless about this industry and have absolutely no knowledge about it, you certainly won't learn it from this book, or any other book.

The author says in this book he has a website / blog (which he lists) that he provides additional info and updates on. But when I checked it out, it was incomplete and had only one posting total, updated in July 2013. I'm sure he had good intentions but he dropped the ball there. If he's THAT busy he could get a virtual secretary or a high school student for that matter to relay an occasional audio update for his blog and convert it to text so it at least looks more professional and is more current.

Overall, this book is really nonsense for someone not familiar whatsoever with the transportation industry. You can find out just about all you need to know on the web if you drill deep enough just like this author did and just copied it all and put it into a book. OJT is the only way you'll learn this business, not from some vague book. The author has been fortunate to be in the top 10% in income as a freight broker - if he's telling the truth- and I applaud him for making it a successful career transition from managing a Burger King.

Weak!

One thing I noticed about this book is that it's almost word-for-word written from various exerpts about the freight business found elsewhere online. All the author did was gather the info and put it into this book. Nothing new whatsoever here that you can't find for free online if you're willing to browse around a bit. I really didn't learn anything new here. It's a very broad outline written about how to get into the freight brokerage business and unless you have knowledge of the transportation business in some shape it'll be a tough go regardless how easy the author makes it sound in this book. And the website he says he keeps updated in this book...lame. It hasn't been updated since summer of 2013 and then only has 1 entry. Deserves 1.5 stars but I was feeling generous and gave this book 2 stars. IMO I'd pass on this book if you're seriously interested in the freight brokerage business.

Excellent Complement to Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide

The Zombie Combat Manual is not a mere retreading of Max Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead. This book takes one small aspect of Brooks' book and delves deeply and broadly into it.

The Zombie Combat Manual not only discusses various weapons to use in lieu of a firearm; it also acts as a training manual for anyone in any physical condition, featuring physical assessments and exercise programs.

Of course it has the obligatory chapter on offensive and defensive equipment, which is seemingly exhaustive, but it also touches on a topic that Brooks omits, which is carrying and protecting children. Imagine being a parent of a newborn or toddler and having to not only survive but protect them as well. Being a father, I could appreciate this section greatly.

Additionally, there's an entire chapter on combat strategies and techniques for fighting the undead. With this chapter, Ma practically creates a new form of martial art with step-by-step illustrations showing how to position, maneuver, and strike with various weapons in various situations of melee combat with a zombie.

If you're a fan of Max Brooks' interviews in World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, then you'll enjoy the interviews in this book as well. In fact, one could almost plant these same stories into the World War Z setting.

Overall, Lovers of Max Brooks' work, as I am, should not look at this book as a competing product, but instead should see Ma's contribution as a complementary product. The content of this book will only better prepare you in the event that you find yourself having to engage in melee combat with a zombie despite all of the tips and strategies followed from Zombie Survival Guide.

NOT a retread of Max Brook's work!

So far, the five star reviewers before me have pretty much voiced my opinions quite nicely. What I will add is that comparing Roger Ma's book to a rip-off/retread of Max Brooks' work (of which I am a huge fan) is like saying anyone currently writing vampire romance is ripping off Dan Curtis's Dark Shadows (or, if you want to go further back, Bram Stoker's Dracula). Both the vampire and the zombie genre have room for many variations on the original themes. Did Brooks include the Bum's Rush in his book as a survival tactic? No, he did not. Both Brooks and Ma have a place on my bookshelf, and both authors deserve kudos for their work.

An authentic and legit addition to the Romero zombie mythology

I just finished reading this book, and if you're a zombie fan and have wondered how to not simply survive, but to battle and defeat the zombie undead, you will love this book.

As a huge Max Brooks (Zombie survival guide), George Romero (Night, Dawn, Day of the Dead Trilogy) and Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead) fan, this book takes a unique angle to the zombie mythology by focusing where these other writers have not, specifically hand to hand combat against the undead. The book goes into detail about specific types of weapons- long, medium, short ranges, how to best utilized the most battle hardened weapons, such as a katana or battle axe, to the more accessible and practical garage tools like the shovel, pitchfork, or hunting knife. Interweaved within these techniques are some pretty graphic and intense first hand accounts and interviews from those who've battled the undead one on one. Well written (unlike some other zombie pub schlock) this book I think will entertain all hardcore fans, as well as the casual one's who ever wondered how they would handle oneself when encountering a zombie confrontation firsthand.

I can attest after reading this book that it is NOT a rehash of Brooks' work, as some others have previously suggested, but rather a great addition to the genre. My favorite and most original chapter for me is on how to protect your children against the undead. Stroller vs. baby bjorn. Great stuff!

The illustrations are great as well that give visual context to the techniques and weapons discussed. I would definitely recommend it to anyone into horror and zombies. Don't trust the online trolls- when there's no more room in hell, there's enough room in the zombie world for Brooks and Ma to coexist together. And from what I'm seeing from the other reviews online, they agree as well.

Great to study for PA comps!!!

Denhardt, really did a great job in summarizing the history of the field of public organization theory. As a person who thought theory was just difficult to learn, I found this book incredibly useful. It became my study guide as I prepared for my comprehensive exam.
The book addresses almost every aspect in terms of general studies for PA. This is definitely a to go book for PA beginners and phd students. Denhardt summarizes the main theorists of all time periods, while also providing an extremely useful chapter on linking theory with practice. Would have liked to see more charts or diagrams.
A must read for students of PA.

Although methods continue to evolve, appreciation of the core principles of the field is the key to effective application of sensory test methods. This book has been expanded to reflect the advances in methodologies, theory, and analysis that have transpired in the last 15 years. The chapters are now divided into numbered subsections. This may be of assistance to educators who may wish to assign only certain critical sections to beginning students. In some of the opening sections instructors will find suggestions about which sections are key for fundamental understanding of that topic or method. In many chapters we have gone out on a limb and specified a “recommended procedure.” In cases where there are multiple options for procedure or analysis, we usually chose a simple solution over one that is more complex.

This text attempts to be comprehensive, yet understandable to all students at the university level. All the major sensory test methods are illustrated and discussed, including discrimination, descriptive, and affective tests. Some chapters are devoted to special topics, such as thresholds, time-intensity methods, similarity testing, color, texture, sensory quality control, qualitative research methods, consumer test methods and questionnaires, shelf life testing, an introduction to multivariate statistical techniques, and strategic sensory research. The statistical appendix provides basic instruction in the common statistical analyses for sensory evaluation with worked examples.

Harry T. Lawless is Professor of Food Science at Cornell University where he teaches sensory evaluation. He has 35 years of experience in chemosensory research and psychophysics. He spent five years in consumer testing in industry, and serves as a consultant to various food and consumer products companies on sensory test methods.

Hildegarde Heymann is Professor of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California at Davis where she teaches sensory evaluation of wine and sensometrics. She spent nearly 17 years at the University of Missouri as a professor of sensory science.

Required for class, also a great reference

Ordered the book from Amazon and got it very quickly. It was required for the class I'm taking, but there's a wealth of information inside, and I'm definitely hanging on to it as a reference once the course is done.

Not only does it provide a practical and theoretical overview of sensory testing, but it contains all of the statistics necessary to evaluate your experiments. There are plenty of reference tables in the appendix, removing the need to do a lot of math in order to determine significance of results.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is in the sensory field

Interesting and well-written book matter

The book itself is a little dry, however, it conveys what you need to know in an understandable way. It provides examples of the statistics involved in sensory testing and many other examples of real-life situations. I did enjoy this book and it worked well with the class I took.

About the Author
Paul Coker was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1977 and describes himself as an expert patient, he is a well know supporter of a number of diabetes charities and a public speaker. Paul has featured in BBC TV programmes about living with diabetes and as public speaker is passionate about diabetes education. Living with diabetes is about all of the things that you can do and for Paul this has included walking barefoot on burning coals, running half marathons and making history as part of the largest ever team of people with type 1 diabetes to summit Kilimanjaro. Paul lives with his wife Denise and their 2 daughters and he is currently planning his next challenge.

Impassioned and inspiring account of how to live life to the full in spite of Type 1 Diabetes

I don't have diabetes myself, but have been living with it in my family for many years, as both my husband and our own child have T1D, so my own life is profoundly affected by the disease every single day. I first met Paul Coker via our regional JDRF group and have been impressed by all the work he does to boost awareness of T1D, to raise funds for diabetes charities, and to help others with diabetes live their lives to the full, in spite of their condition, so I was very interested to hear about his new book.

In it, he records and expands upon his own long journey with diabetes, candidly sharing the ups and downs and helping others to benefit from what he has learned along the way. One of the many great things about this book is that he admits to his own occasional failures. This is very empowering to the reader, because it lets them off the hook for their own inevitable crises or errors of judgement in managing their diabetes, while also encouraging them to get back on the wagon, rather than going into a downward spiral of despair.

The reader cannot fail to be impressed by Paul's zest for life, his determination and his integrity, and this book will inspire and encourage anyone who struggles with managing their own diabetes. I don't expect everyone to agree with everything he says - I didn't (e.g. his views on diet), and obviously all readers shouldn't change their management techniques and practices without consulting their own medical support team - but it's still worth reading all that he has to say, and then drawing your own conclusions as to what to take away from his book, and there is plenty in here that is very helpful indeed.

One of the best take-aways for me was his recommended stance for meeting your medical team - that you should act like you are chairman of the board, and the medics are your staff, working for you - that's hugely empowering and positive attitude. Too often, clinic appointments can make you feel like you're up in front of the headmaster, on the defensive, but Paul's approach has transformed the way I view them now.

Another feature that I particularly appreciated was, at the back of the book, essays by some of his family members on how his diabetes has affected them. I've heard many families talk about the impact of one child's diabetes on their siblings, and his brother's account is especially powerful and moving. I'll be recommending this section in particular to friends who have issues with siblings' anxieties.

All in all, an interesting, stimulating, positive book, written with conviction and integrity, that is a welcome addition to my growing library of diabetes-related books.

Despite frequent media accounts of such unpleasant matters as mad cow disease and outbreaks of food poisoning at fast-food restaurants, Nicols Fox argues, we know too little about the threat that current methods of food manufacture and distribution pose to health. Citing Center for Disease Control figures that put the food poisoning count alone at more than 81 million cases a year in the United States, she notes that in many countries it is unsafe to eat the skins of uncooked vegetables, eggs, ground meat, and other staples. Part of the problem lies in advances in transportation and storage technology, which allow us to consume foods grown very far away and at all seasons; part lies in the fact that bacteria are evolving to survive efforts to contain them. Fox's book is alarming--but appropriately so.

Journalist Fox investigated the fast-food hamburgers tainted with E. coli bacteria that were making people sick--and killing children--on the West Coast in 1993. Her study of food-borne disease here is concerned with our nation's food, especially the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which monitors outbreaks of disease and food contaminants. She uncovers such pathogens as Salmonella in unpasteurized orange juice at Disney World, Cryptosporidium in freshly pressed cider from apples that were not thoroughly washed, and Listeria, which obstinately thrives in chilled oxygen-poor conditions, e.g., packages of precut salad greens. She devotes a chapter to British cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or as it is popularly dubbed, mad cow disease, and she discusses the microbial threats of food imports and the workers who take foodstuffs from the ground or feedlot to the marketplace. Will change the way you eat

This book is a brilliant investigation into the present state of our food supply. Many of us have read scattered news items about food poisoning outbreaks here and there, but have never really noticed what's been happening to our food supply. In this book, Fox brings together hundreds of stories of outbreaks, and through them, brings the elusive big picture into focus. Fox takes us behind the burger counters back to the factory farm, where chickens are sick, and cows are fattened up on the dung and bedding from the sick chickens. The manure from the chicken-dung eating cows is spread on apple orchards, and all of the sudden organic apple cider must be pasteurized to kill the e. coli. Before reading this book, I wondered why eating raw cookie dough never made me sick as a child, but now we're cautioned never even to consider such dangerous habits. As Fox explains, eating raw eggs wasn't dangerous before, but thanks to modern agribusiness practices, chickens have salmonella in their ovaries, so all eggs must be assumed to be tainted As a result, the only safe egg these days is one whose yolk is cooked solid- -eating eggs sunny-side up is akin to Russian roulette.
Fox's main message is that it is vitally important to know who grew your food and how, as well as who cooked your food. If you choose to eat meat, you should know where the meat came from. In the interests of making a profit, factory farms feed meat and milk animals waste products including diseased animal parts and dung. Even if the animals are able to digest such a diet, bacteria and other pathogens from such a diet eventually end up on our plates. Hamburger meat is exceptionally risky since a single pound can include meat from hundreds of individual cows, and if any one of those hundreds carries a pathogen, the entire lot of meat will be tainted. The only way to be reasonably sure of getting healthy meat is to purchase it from a farmer that you know, someone whose farm you can visit in person. Meanwhile, food handlers and preparers seem to be less and less familiar with basic rules of food safety. Fox mentions supermarket workers who don't know the dangers of dented or bulging cans, and teenagers earning minimum wage frying meat at burger joints who have never cooked anything before in their lives. She stresses how important it is not to assume that food is safe just because it is on sale. Sure, the USDA, FDA, and threat of lawsuits give the consumer some protection, but a lawsuit is of little use in bringing a child back to life after a little case of food poisoning.
Living in Dubai, my husband and I experience at least one incidence of food poisoning per month, despite being cautious about where and what we eat. We have learned to inspect every package carefully in the supermarket, considering the country of origin, the condition of the container, and the manner in which the goods are stored. In restaurants, we choose our food not by what looks tastiest, but instead by what is least likely to be tainted. We've seen supermarket food handlers at the deli counter blithely lift dripping raw chickens over cooked ones and we've become vegetarians out of necessity. In this book, Fox argues that it's up to American consumers to see that their food supply doesn't continue to go the same way.

What You Don't Know Will Hurt You

Fox's well-researched book is shocking. Mad Cow Disease is a trivial problem compared to some of the others revealed in this fascinating investigation into the underbelly and oversights of America's food industry.
But also check out Peter Phillips' CENSORED 1999's top censored news story for an additional jolt: a government near you soon will be wholly beholden to any corporation which chooses to violate the already-established food laws. If the powers that be get their way, the stories in fox's SPOILED will be barely the tip of the iceberg in a few short years.

Important reading for everyone.

I found out about the book because it was referenced at the end of Robin Cook's book Toxin. The author gives detailed accounts of numerous outbreaks of contaminated food. She shows that what we were lead to believe was an isolated incident, is not an isolated incident. I was amazed to find out that Russia demanded higher standards for the chickens that are shipped to their country, but as American citizens we have not asked for higher standards.
She points out that consumers have been blamed for not using proper food handling when in fact the food producer is at fault for not providing safe food.
While I really liked the book, I gave it only 4 stars because at times the book can be a little too detailed. I found it difficult to keep reading the book at times.
