Wow! Unique and beautiful, great information

I've been looking forward to a book like this. It's magic! The typeset art is astounding, so different! And it really helps to transmit difficult information. The Tibetans are always so circumspect about tantra. This book speaks volumes about Yabyum, highest tantra yoga, in plan English and really tasty poetry. Some of it is over my head, but it feels empowered with magic, true magic. It's definitely a limited edition collector's item, if you love books and treasure the pure creation of enlightened spirits!

I too have sought, travelled, learned, received blessings and empowerments and teachings from far-flung gurus. If I were to write a book - and I probably will - it would look a lot like this. I think it is a preview of how things will look when the sleeping part of women's DNA wakes up and expresses itself.

Brilliant!

I very much enjoyed this autobiography. I learned a lot about cattle ranching in Colorado. Which honestly, I knew nothing about. But I even more enjoyed the adventures overseas. I do look forward to an autobiography from David's wife, Karen, to hear the other half of the story.

Excellent, well written 5 stars

I would endorse the comments of the two earlier reviewers. However, in so doing, I would say that this book is not “debris from a sinking ship” i.e. Flotsam. Rather it is the account of a man who has been successful in two totally different careers, and one who has a remarkable memory for detail. It is both interesting and entertaining.

On the one hand there is the cowboy cum partner of a cattle feeder business in Colorado and later in Russia. On the other is the academic economist at home as student at London School of Economics, and professor at Berkley, Colorado State and the International Water Management Institute in Sri Lanka. In this latter role he is concerned with the broader issues of agricultural and economic development. But he occasionally stops to do something practical like inventing a gadget for squaring the circle on pivot irrigation.

Those who have met of even known the author on his travels around the globe may only know one half of the story, either the business man or the academic. They will have to read this book for the rest of the story.

Finally, the one common denominator, where-ever Seckler traveled it seems that the people drank a lot. However, I am sure that his 4 to 9 AM working hours were never disturbed by a hangover. Workaholic-yes; alcoholic-no

An American Life Generates a Great Read

Highly recommended, and hard to put down. These salty, sardonic recollections of an American who has led an adventurous and perceptive life both at home and abroad are a page-turner. From a farming and farm business family background in Colorado, David Seckler was untypical enough to be reading Kant before he finished high school. He went on, via the London School of Economics and a published dissertation study on Thorstein Veblen, to be an econ professor at Colorado State and Berkeley, and an international water expert travelling the world and then running an important irrigation institute in Sri Lanka. He reports vivid experiences along the way, not only in his family and businesses in the United States, but in India and Bangladesh, Africa, the Soviet Union and other countries. It becomes clear that Seckler is one of the technical and economic experts, far from faceless, who created the modern world economy, especially its agricultural side, with lots of intense “learning experiences” along the way, recounted here with panache and zing.

When music began to be recorded, everything changed

This is a book about what audio recording has done to our minds, our culture, our economy, and most of all to our relationship with music. Along the way, Chanan gives an excellent short history of "phonography --" the art of recording sound, from 1902 when Caruso's voice was found to perfectly suited to drowning out surface noise, up to the '90s, when Chuck D of Public Enemy explains that the sound of New York City rap is "more of a headphone thing" because people in the Big Apple don't drive much. Songs from places where you need wheels, like Philadelphia or L.A. are made to be heard on car stereos instead.
The advent of the Edison cylinder, and later the 78 rpm disc, forever changed the fundamental relationship of musician, music, and listener. Prior to recordings, music was etherial, gone forever when the performance was over, and known only to those who were there. When music became a commodity, the performance was separated from a time and place. Moreover, it provided a way to "notate" musical forms (like the blues) that had been transmitted only in person.
Early on, it became apparent that there was big money to be made if one had a hit record -- Caruso personally made over $2 million between 1902 and 1921, when he died -- and corporations were quick to start what we now know as the Record Business. Chanan describes the confluence of technology, copyright law, and popular culture that has made the music scene what it is today: a massive multinational machine, that requires a steady stream of fresh, disposable product.
We are musically different creatures then our ancestors of a century ago. A hundred years ago, no one could have imagined music being used as aural furniture, as it is in an elevator, airport, or dentist's office. Not a single one of our great-great-grandparents ever had the experience of intimately *knowing* a performance as we do -- of having the first note of an overheard Motown song germinate inside your head with 20 years worth of memo! ries, and "hearing" every nuance of horn, snare, and reverb before they occur.
This isn't a book that one blows through in a hurry. I had to keep stopping to reread sentences and let them sink in, and adjust to some new perspective on a topic I thought I knew all about. My modest recording studio seems different now; somehow more powerful and more miraculous. I don't know if I'm a better phonographer for having read _Repeated Takes_, but I do know a lot more about the implications of pressing "Record."

However, it was sent as a poor-quality print-on-demand edition, which was not made clear in the product page. Please make sure the edition you are receiving is an authentic publication before purchase.

Not bad, but not great either

While the book does have a lot of diagrams that are clear and often helpful, they sometimes must be so at the expense of textual content that is very muddled, overly wordy, and difficult to follow. Topics are often discussed in an indirect, roundabout fashion that makes comprehending what the author is trying to say more of a challenge than learning the embryological processes should be. I find myself constantly becoming frustrated at having to read over passages two or three times just to figure out what exactly is going on - much more so than with any other text I've yet to come across in medical school.

Get Langman's instead, if you have the option. Much clearer and more concise. And funny enough, a lot of the better illustrations in Carlson cite being adapted from images previously published by Langman.

It is a good basic book in developmental biology.

Carlson's "Human embriology and developmental biology" is a good book for biology and, most of all, medicine students, who want to understand the basical principles of development. It doesn't have a lot of developmental anatomy, but it explains clearly and simply the ultimate advances in experimental embriology. If you are for the first time studying developmental biology, you should read it. It also contains at the end of each chapter a lot references, which will help you if you want to learn more about any specific topic.
