Lorenzo Baccalà is, among other things, a social philosopher who ponders over the impact of sex both on individuals and life in general. Once he read what has become one of his favorite quotes. "Sex is like fire. It can warm up your home or burn it down" He observes that sex is now everywhere and, paradoxically, little is reliably written on the details of the art and science of making love to women let alone the other way around. Because of G's vast sexual experience with women, Lorenzo concluded that, unlike books or editorials on sex scandals, descriptions of his real-life encounters with women have immense educational values for both sexes. One night, while having drinks at the famous King Cole Bar at the distinguished St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan, he, with great difficulty and calling upon all of his persuasive powers about the need of such a book, convinced him to be interviewed for it. G, however, recognizing the heavy criticisms which will inevitably follow its publication, insisted on one unbudgeable condition - that he remain anonymous. He currently lives in isolation in a small cabin on top of a mountain but promised to keep in touch on sexual matters by writing a column on sex, G's Spot, at www.thedecraptitationsociety.com.

Enticingly good read

This book captivated me right from the start. Right from the first page it grabbed hold of me and would not let me put it down until I had devoured every last word of this tale. Granted, I closed one eye while reading certain chapters (not entirely sure it made me blush less).
All in all, a book I would recommend - very well written, definitely learned a few things ;) and would keep it on my bookshelf to read again. Now, if only all men would read it ... Women would be thankful ...

The Man Who Made Love.....

When you read the title you might think this is a tell-all about a man who thought he was the best lover, and although the man knew his limits, he also understood the interaction. The book is written as a series of interviews or conversations between two old friends, the author and G. Whether it is actually a true story or not doesn't really effect the story. G explains to his friend, who is quite skeptical at first all the adventures of his life. He has learned what is pleasing to a man and a woman, and how to achieve maximum pleasure.

As you read the book, each chapter talks about a different act or circumstance and how it worked best and what made it memorable and enlightening. If anything, it could be used as a manual by men and women alike to understand the other better and learn to pleasure each other a little more than looking out for themselves.

There are a number of topics, some which might not appeal to some readers, but overall I felt it was more of a book meant to make people think about how they approach sexual interactions, and maybe, just maybe change a little of that thinking to make it all that much better.

Fasten your seatbelts! G's amorous adventures around the globe are both entertaining and educational for all generations. I found it interesting that G, like Casanova, was a charming lover who enjoyed the company of all types of women and the act of giving them pleasure. Each chapter reveals a titillating experience ranging from the art of seduction vs. domination to nymphomaniacs, ménage a trois and more. There is an insightful analysis of what our future holds when the apocalyptical aphrodisiac arrives. Humor and wisdom combine to make this a great read! Wherefore art thou G?

This Rock Book Really Rocks!

Review of "The Real Rock Book"
I bought this book while visiting family in Prescott, AZ. Bought it because it is not like any other song book in my library. What makes it different is that it has EVERYTHING but the bass clef! There is just so much more detail than I have ever seen in a "Fake" book. So I thought well maybe all the "Real" series of books are done like this. Not So! I could not find another one like this.
No skimping on detail here! Whoever put this book together for Hal Leonard was a journeyman musician who I wish had received credit for the work. I also like that the chords are in a nice big bold handwritten style that is easy for my old eyes to read.
It's really too bad that there is no "Look Inside" feature so you could see some examples, so I'll do what I can to describe it.
Each piece identifies each section as intro, outro, verse, bridge, interlude, chorus, whatever. It appears to me that every attempt has been made to make it match the recorded version of the song.
My son Robert, who plays bass guitar, has an extensive song library on his iPad. I watched as he picked songs from this book, played them from his iPad through his amp and accompanied them on his bass by following the chords in the book. It seemed that in most cases, the song in the book matched the key in which the song had been recorded and followed the original arrangement. I gifted him the book before I left and ordered myself one from Amazon as soon as I got home.
There are 200 songs in the book , by my count and only one, "Walk Don't Run", an instrumental by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith, has no lyrics. Every other song in the book, has the lyrics and multiple verses. You will also find things like "Guitar Solo" or "Harmonica Solo", even "w/ lead voc. ad lib", things that help you re-create the original recorded sound. It gets even better. I did not find a single song that required a page flip!. Most songs occupy two pages and start on the left page.
I'm looking at "Hard Habit To Break" (HHTB) on page 126, and it is in the key of F#. On two side by side pages it shows Intro with "keys" in m1 and "flutes" in m2, good stuff to emulate with a keyboard. Also shows verse, chorus, Bridge, Trombone Solo, Outro-Chorus sections. All you need to try to re-create, if you want, or just dress up the piece or just pick up technique. This is not a simplistic Fake Book. It shows 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, and slash chords. Some measures show the written out comped chords. For example, in the bridge of HHTB you will find: F/A F-/Ab Eb/g Eb-/Gb Bbmaj7 in one measure, The comped chords are fully written out below the chord symbols. Thats a lot of attention to detail, which I'm sure is intended to let the reader re-create the original sound.
I felt compelled to write this lengthy review, because this is an extremely well done book and it deserves a large audience. Furthermore, I have not found it's equal in the Real/Fake book genre.
As far as the song selections go, almost all of the 200 songs in this book will be readily identified by anyone interested enough in a book entitled "The Real Rock Book" to read its reviews.
The book by itself is terrific, but to be able to play the original recording and use the book to add in your own stuff is a really fun bonus.
This is a five-star book, no doubt about it. Kudos to its Editor and Hal Leonard Publishing!

A Must Have

This is a well thought out book with correct chords and lyrics for all of the tunes. It is a must have for any musician that plays in a band or does solo piano/vocal or guitar/vocal work today. Most of these songs are the requests I often get at gigs.

Excellent arrangements. Pretty good song selections.

I don't think I've seen a better rock fake book, in terms of the quality of the arrangements. All the essential details are there and they seem to be accurate.

There is NO TAB, however, and some of the parts are written using very high notes. So, if you're not a very good reader in standard notation, you may have trouble using this book to its fullest.

There are a lot of very good songs included, but, as always, it's missing some essential songs and includes some songs that are real head scratchers -e.g. when's the last time you heard "Garden Party" on the radio?

But, all in all, a great book.

Not your average mixology book!

Your average cocktail/bartender book is usually just the result of somebody gathering together as many recipes as they can find, prefacing it with the obligatory "how to stock your home bar" chapter, then selecting "File / Print..." Is it any wonder then that people these days are confused as to what a Martini really is?
Thankfully, Gary Regan has shown us that a mixology book can be far more then we have come to expect.
In "The Joy of Mixology", Gary lays out for us the results of what obviously has been many years of research into what cocktails really are, and how to make them properly. First he covers the common topics such as history, bartending, garnishes, glassware, but with far more interesting information then you most likely have seen elsewhere. Mr. Regan then dives into laying out the various styles of cocktails and mixed drinks, and how to understand them in ways that focus on the proper and well-balanced construction of each style. There is a lot of meat in how he organizes his lists, and a wealth of information behind their proper construction.
Cocktails really don't need to be as confusing as they seem to be to most people. This book goes a long way in not only making sense of the large array of cocktail selections available, but also in bringing to light the potentials of a "Quality" cocktail experience.

This is THE BOOK

I'm surprised that this book doesn't have more reviews - I am usually too preoccupied or lazy to take the time to write Amazon reviews, but in this case I had to speak! This really is THE BOOK if you're looking to learn the art of mixology, the craft of the cocktail, the joy of boozing it up in a delicious and debonair way! I am rather obsessive with the whole mixing drinks thing - and an obsessive buyer of cocktail books - but the only two that really matter - the only two that are ESSENTIAL and not just a novelty to own - are this book and Dale Degroff's the Craft of the Cocktail. Buy others if you have the inclination, but if you're wondering what to buy to learn, or to enjoy, or to be able to say you have the definitive books on the subject - buy those two. And believe me, I've tried out enough of the recipes to KNOW what I'm talking about!

Book came with missing pages, pages out of order, whole chapters missing. It was brand new and sealed so I was shocked. I'm returning and buying the ebook because I need it for school and I can't wait to see if the next one is functional. I hope we don't need it during class or lab...

Lacks clarity and organization

The first time I read this book I did not like it. I figured I was being too harsh. My second time reading it only made me dislike it more. I'm not saying it is a horrible book, but it is not as easy to read as most other textbooks I have learned from.

My main gripes are that the book lacks clarity and organization. The authors use an approachable, casual tone. An unintended side effect is vague language and poor word choice results in confusion. Sometimes an adequate introductory paragraph with a structural overview for a chapter or segment is not provided. In some instances, they provide an overview paragraph then abandon the structure it provided. Other times structure is not logically appealing. Paragraphs may cite information that seems out of place or unimportant and feel overall disorganized/ lost. Additionally, there are outright errors (the instructor had to state when to ignore the text) lead to more confusion.

The best book on the topic

By starting with life experiences of some individual male and female berdache, Roscoe literally captivates readers, before carrying us into the comparative, theoretical, analytical second half which is sophisticated but clearly written. Will Roscoe's work on North American berdache/"two spirit" is far and away the most theoretically sophisticated and historically systematic work in a burgeoning field. While many people have been pawing at a few historical records and fantasizing a great deal, he has systematically gone through a multilingual literature, showed how the discourse unfolded in specific European national traditions, and sorted out continuities and discontinuities in space and in time (both in the discourse and in the phenomena of Native American cultural survivla, insofar as it can be glimpsed through Christianity-distorted lenses).

Although Roscoe's primary focus is on historical records of "berdache," he has also discusses contemporary "gay Indians," building on his earlier book _Living the Spirit_. My only regret is that Roscoe did not include his article "Was We'Wah [the Zuni "man-woman' he wrote an earlier book about] a homosexual?" in this book. _Changing Ones_ is the single indispensable book on the subject of gender and sexuality of Native American gender-mixing roles.

Two-spirit people limited to homosexuality?

The book was an easy and enjoyable read. Roscoe makes the historical documents and stories a lot more accessible than just an offering of dry comments. I loved how he related the two spirited of then to those of today and how he discribed the many forms of discrimination they must face both then and now.

The only issue I find with this book is that, although he states that historically those of two spirits were not necessarily homosexual, nor were they limited to the activities of one gender over another but many times participated in both, he doesn't mention modern day two spirit people who identify as bisexual except in the context of a modern "problem", alongside alcoholism, drug use and prostitution. He does this while alluding to bisexuality being accepted historically and stating how some two spirit people had children, which at the time, was impossible without both genders being involved.

I find it interesting that although Roscoe is doing humanity a service by providing this kind of education to all as well as liberation those two spirit who may still feel alone in their reservations amid so much persecution; he is shortchanging the very essence of the Two Spirit person, denying ALL it's many shades. This only perpetuates the poisonous discrimination the gay movement has fought so hard to dismantle, yet keeps alive within it's own community.

In this aspect, I would consider this writing as the gay community has considered many of the first writings on homosexuality- up to a certain point, discriminating and ignorant. However, besides that it's an excellent book considering what is available out there.

A fantastic resource on Native American 3rd/4th genders

Will Roscoe has compiled a wonderful and invaluable overview of a long-neglected topic. As he notes in the introduction to this volume, our language is currently burdened by an archaic and often unhelpful lexicon in addressing 'third and fourth genders' so commonly encountered in pre-Columbian North America. This book includes a compilation of the historical and current literature, and readers will find the extensive Glossary and the Tribal Index to be of great use as a source for further investigation.
