“Writing a small volume in a planned series, Mr. Smailes has had to work within the limits of about 150 pages of text, and has confined his references mainly to works available in English. His book is therefore, essentially a study of urbanism in Great Britain… Smailes has traced the course of urbanism, as expressed through the development of cities, from very early times; he has analysed the more important conditions of emplacement of cities and towns; has displayed the commoner features of their morphology by reference to numerous examples in various parts of the world; and has demonstrated the existence of a pattern of “urban fields” in Great Britain which ought to claim the attention of all rural and urban planning authorities.”

About the Author
Arthur E. Smailes (1911-1984) was professor of geography, University of London. He was founder member of the Institute of British Geographers and also served as its secretary. In his career, he was granted a chair at Queen Mary College which later became the first chair of geography and was the recipient of the Research Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
