Covering the period from the Daode jing to the end of the Tang, Livia Kohn reveals an often misunderstood Chinese mystical tradition that continued through the ages. Influenced by but ultimately independent of Buddhism, it took forms more various than the quietistic withdrawal of Laozi or the sudden enlightenment of the Chan Buddhists. On the basis of a new theoretical evaluation of mysticism, this study analyzes the relationship between philosophical and religious Taoism and between Buddhism and the native Chinese tradition. Kohn shows how the quietistic and socially oriented Daode jing was combined with the ecstatic and individualistic mysticism of the Zhuangzi, with immortality beliefs and practices, and with Buddhist insight meditation, mind analysis, and doctrines of karma and retribution. She goes on to demonstrate that Chinese mysticism, a complex synthesis by the late Six Dynasties, reached its zenith in the Tang, laying the foundations for later developments in the Song traditions of Inner Alchemy, Chan Buddhism, and Neo-Confucianism.

A crucial, balanced history of Taoism

This is an excellent history and treatment of the mystical tradition in Taoism up through the Tang period, written from a scholarly perspective. It gives the broad contours of the mystic experience and provides a survey of the literature. Specifically, it takes up the philosophical tradition (Tao Te Ching, Chuang Tzu, Lieh Tzu, etc.), the shamanic/ecstatic thread (Chuci, the "flight to the stars" etc.), Shangqing Taoism, Guo Xiang, the so-called "Hedonistic" tradition of Yang Zhu, Twofold Mystery, meditation, cross-currents with Buddhism, and much, much more. It also engages with some lesser-trodden but nonetheless important texts like 'The Scripture of the Western Ascension'. In my opinion, this is an indispensable book for anyone with an interest in Taoism. Aside from being extremely informative, its importance lies in its emphasis on the traditions listed above. So often, contemporary western books on Taoism vaunt internal alchemy, but this crucial history by Kohn reminds us that Taoism is so much more than that. Having said this, it might actually have been nice if she had in fact explored alchemy here too (it gets only a couple of brief mentions), and contextualized it alongside the more dominant aspects of Taoism that she does explore. However, one notes that Kohn later co-edited a volume on Internal Alchemy, which is also well worth the read. This, though, should be anyone's starting point for the history of Taoism.

Illuminating and Informative

This book is excellent for anyone with a serious interest in Chinese religions. It traces the development of Chinese mystical thought and practice from the earliest mystical and philosophical writings up through the Tang dynasty. In addition to its appeal to the scholarly community, anyone who has read and enjoyed some of the works of Chinese mysticism will find that this book provides a background in which to better understand what they have already read as well as exposing them to works they are not yet familiar with. All in all an excellent read.

Folklorist and author Hausman has combined ten years of informal study in Jamaica, the 1922 version of "The Queen of Sheba and Her Only Son Menyelek" (translated by E.A. Wallis Budge), the Koran, the King James Bible, and the words of reggae great Bob Marley into a new version of the Kebra Negast ("the glory of the Kings"). This "lost bible," the core of Rastafarian wisdom and faith, has survived through oral tradition in many Caribbean nations, even though it has been banned because of its African glory themes. Hausman effectively puts the Kebra Negast into the words of the Rastafarian community, presenting the core?that "we must learn to live by the laws of compassion rather than judgment"?through anecdotes from the author's travels in the Rasta community. Let the reader beware

This version is not to be confused with the classic text of Ethiopian religion/mythology of the same name. This version contains excerpts from the classical ancient text and combines it with anecdotes and sayings of rasafarianism, which is itself a recent concept dating back to the days of Selassie's coronation in 1930 (another story altogther). Basically, this version tries to connect the classic text with modern rastafarianism. If you're interested in rastafarianism, you can go ahead with this. But if you're interested in an English translation of the actual Kebra Nagast (Glory of Kings), see the E.A. Wallace Budge translation or the Miguel Brooks translation.

Best Romantic Suspense Series I've Ever Read!!!!!

After reading the first book in this series, I had to move straight into the second. This is the best love story I've ever read, and the way the romantic scenarios are written will turn your temperature up a few degrees for sure. Fifty Shades of Gray has nothing on this series. There are so many layers to the story, and the characters are so well developed. The suspense would build, and I had to see how it turned out. I simply couldn't put it down. The books are written so masterfully, and in such amazing detail, that as you're reading this it plays out in your head as a movie. I will start book 3, as soon as I finish this review.

Great build off of the first book. This one takes the story and just keeps adding more goodness to it! The mystery, intrigue and tensions all take a big jump up! Can't wait to get to the next one!

Unlike the first book which took me awhile to get into, I couldn't put this one down. When I hit the end of the book I was surprised--it was too abrupt. I'm going to be buying Book 3 shortly!

"The Leadington Incident" recounts the disturbing experience of a Cabinet minister who suddenly perceives that though the people around him move and talk as though alive, they are all actually just animated corpses or sleepwalking zombies. The nine tales in this collection are strange, fantastic, and often unsettling, and they represent Priestley at his best.

This 60th anniversary edition, the first reprinting of The Other Place in more than forty years, includes a new introduction by Priestley scholar John Baxendale. Priestley's classic novel of psychological terror, Benighted (1927), is also available from Valancourt Books.

Stories of the Same Sort

I didn't write the introduction to this one, like I did to Valancourt's reissue of Benighted, so hopefully Amazon won't consider it a conflict of interest for me to write this review. Prior to writing the intro to BENIGHTED, I'd read only a handful of short pieces by J.B. Priestley, so when I learned that, along with BENIGHTED, Valancourt had also gotten the rights to reprint this collection of his short weird tales, I was very excited to check it out, and it didn't disappoint. It's as charming a selection of stories as the full title (THE OTHER PLACE & OTHER STORIES OF THE SAME SORT) would imply, reminiscent of other charming weird British writers of a similar period, including E.F. Benson and some of Nigel Kneale, to name a couple of which I am particularly fond.

While all the stories in THE OTHER PLACE fall under the broad rubric of the weird or strange tale, only a few struck me as what I would call horror. Instead, they focus on inexplicable and dreamlike situations, visions, people thrust suddenly back in time. Those that do go for shudders do an admirable job, and are generally my favorite stories in the book. There are some really dramatic and incredible (if brief) descriptions of suitably weird monsters, especially in "The Grey Ones," which was my favorite story in the book, and deserves to be more widely known in weird fiction circles.
