Learning to play again at the age of 59+

Folks,

I started playing - or at least trying when I was in the third grade. I didn't play much beyond two more years due to lousy instructors and even lousier music picks. Life passed on, and finally, I came upon these books. I purchased all three of this series and started out fresh. I've now been playing (self taught) for about 5 months. Yes, I still stumble and make it sound bad from time to time, but these books have given me the confidence that if I practice and practice, I can sound great. Other people have listened to me play, and they just cannot believe what they are hearing.

I even bought the entire series for my 81 yr old mother to start playing again with. I guess that pretty much sums it up.

BTW, if you change it up some, "Little Brown Jug" can become "My Ding-A-Ling"!

Self Study piano learning

Really like this book, already got the second in the series for when I finish the first. If you want to learn piano, and you are a busy person, this is the way to go. I like that the book also discusses a bit of music theory. There are instructions on how to write music, how to read music, and how to play. Really really excellent. The only thing to remember is that if you don't have a piano teacher beside you you can be messing up your technique unwittingly, so if that is an issue self study would probably not be for you. LOVE IT!!

A Super book and /dvd

If I could I would give this book 10 stars, I played piano and organ about 30 years ago and just recently at the age of 93 revived my music, bought an organ and later an electric piano. The organ and I got along very well, but the piano was a different story. After trying many "how to books" I purchased this book. Wow! What a difference - my piano and I are now good friends and I have learned so much from this book and DVD and I am still learning. I have been thru the book twice and still find other things to learn, If you are a budding pianist, and want to learn without a teacher I highly recommend this book. All of Alfred's book are good.

Program difficult to understand. Theory complicated.

The theory is discribed with difficult mathematical analysis. Other books gives results and not just mathematical formulas. Also, there are no appendixes or pictures at all. The analysis is a zero and you have to know exactly and extensively the heat convection theory to read this book. In other words, buy this book if you are going to study heat transfer extensively (university project, being a proffesor etc.). I am studying Mechanical Engineering, I did read many books about heat convection and the way that this book is written isn't the appropriate. Finally, the program is not one but ten small programs. Written in Fortran, the least that the author could do is to give a small compiler. Who can find a Fortran compiler these days? Who knows Fortran well enough to change the program list to describe the program he/she studies ? Furthermore, this book is expensive for what it offers and it doesn't contain any book resources. I think that Mr. Nakayama (I had read other books of him and found them good) has to think over the writing of this book again. After all, it is written in 1995.

Nothing to offer

I had read many books about "Heat Transfer" but this book is out of reality !!! It's all of mathematical formulas and nothing more. It doesn't contain any comment on heat transdfer and the examples it uses are not helping. Also, the program listing is in Fortran (remember ?), something difficult to use (if you find a compiler first). In other words buy this book if you read ALL the others. If you want to write a project on heat transfer look out for better books. Anyway, this book is not edifying but it just confuses the terms and the values.

Reuniting with Loved Ones in Heaven

Acknowledging the pain in loss of a loved one in death, the writings in this book, gleaned from Scripture, Church Fathers, Church teachings, and
saints offer much hope and joy in contemplating what is promised to us when we are reunited with loved ones and others who have
gone before us. Readers are encouraged to not mourn with excess those who have died, but rather to aid them with our prayers, supplications, alms and sacrifices. Further it explains that such provide consolation to their souls. Readers are encouraged to be grateful for the sacrifice of Christ, who through his death on the Cross opened heaven for us, making heavenly reunions possible.

The book is good reading for anyone, but can be a source of consolation to those who grieve.

Indispensable volume on the global spread of modern occultism

This collection of articles is an important contribution to academic scholarship on modern esotericism. It is the first volume to address in a systematic fashion the global spread of western esoteric currents (especially those formed in the crucible of 19th century anglophone occultism), and thus the first attempt to place the recent critical historical work on esotericism in a global context. There is clearly much more work to be done in this area, and Occultisn in a Global Perspective will not be the final word in the debate. It is nevertheless an excellent and indispensable reference for scholars interested in this area of study.

Good Resource

It doesn't cover any fresh theoretical or analytical ground, but this book provides a good historical summary of the weaponization of sound in the 20th and early 21st centuries. Although scholarly, the writing has energy and mostly avoids humanities-style impenetrability. Careful citations and good footnotes point the interested reader toward more thorough studies. While I haven't read the original French, I don't imagine that much was lost on the way over to English. Pretty good!

LOTS OF PISTACHIOS

The book is a bit incoherent, since it jumps around eras. But it gives a lot of interesting detail. It was good to learn one good feature on Neolithic living, lots of pistachios.
