Should be titled "RxJava Android Essentials", but still relevant

RxJava is a pretty new library and reactive programming altogether is only starting to get noticed. Although challenging to learn, I have found reactive programming to solve many problems I have struggled with, especially when it comes to managing mutability and state. It might sound like a bit of a hyperbole, but it may very well be the future.

Although the concepts of reactive programming were largely realized by the folks at Microsoft and implemented first into .NET, RxJava came about a few years ago when Netflix needed a better means to scale their services. They open-sourced the library on GitHub and it has started to get notice especially after Java 8 came out with lambdas.

That being said, this is a pretty good book if you feel overwhelmed by the online documentation, manifestos, and tutorials out there (I think I have read most of them). However, I was a bit disappointed this book was geared largely towards Android development. As someone primarily interested in JavaFX and BI applications, I found 1/4 of the content Android-specific and irrelevant. But the other 3/4 is relevant to any Java developer. I would have authored the Android stuff in its own chapter, rather than scattering it throughout the book.

Overall, this is a good book to get a grasp on reactive programming with RxJava and getting quick applicable knowledge of the many Observable operations. If you are interested in Java GUI development be sure to check out Tomas Mikula's excellent ReactFX library on GitHub as well.

This book was pretty helpful in getting my feet wet with RxJava. It does a pretty good top level overview of the concepts and provides good examples. The Retrofit + Rx chapter was a plus and pretty useful. I feel ready for a more advanced book now. Forgive the typos, typed using a phone.

This is a pretty good collection of documents and I use it in conjunction with Steven Ambrose's "Rise to Globalism" to teach my American Foreign Policy class at my university. But this book does leave out some documents that I feel are key, and badly needs to be updated. Otherwise, it is the only one I have found that even remotely does what I wanted a book like this to do, and that is to provide primary sources as a companion to an analytical narrative like Ambrose's.

The operator interface to the control system has been listed as a contributing factor in several major incidents. Until recently, there have been few books on the subject of control system human machine interface (HMI) design. One of the books published in the last year is Human-Machine Interface Design for Process Control Applications, by Jean-Yves Fiset. Fiset is president of Systèmes Humains-Machines Inc. He has a PhD from École Polytechnique de Montréal and nearly 30 years of experience, including several years with Atomic Energy of Canada specializing in human-machine interfaces, automated emergency operating procedures and control rooms.

The first chapters introduce the challenge and benefit of successful HMI design. Modern plants with modern control systems can overwhelm an operator without a well designed HMI. Fiset advocates the user centered design process. It is important to note that this does not mean just give the users what they want, but rather to understand the tasks the users must perform and to provide an interface that assists in the execution of those tasks. Fiset uses examples to illustrate the process for designing a new HMI, including a plan, schedule, task analysis, requirements, specification, documentation, and initial designs. Several design tips are also included.

The next chapters cover the development of an HMI specification and the evaluation of a design against the requirements. Fiset includes an example outline for a specification and references related guidelines. The specification may be developed by evaluating mock-ups of the HMI. Two of the evaluation methods discussed are heuristic evaluation and usability testing. Heuristic evaluations test the HMI design against good practice. Usability testing checks the performance of the design through simulated tasks.

Fiset also describes methods to improve an existing HMI, with or without a design basis. If there is a design basis, the improvement process focuses on using capabilities and addressing learning identified from the operation of the current system. The ideal improvement process is continuous. Without design basis, the process looks more like the process of design of a new HMI, with the identification of tasks and documenting the specification. There is a brief discussion on adapting displays to different types of processes, such as continuous, batch, and discrete. The process does not change, though the user tasks may.

The final chapters cover the design of the broader HMI. One aspect is the integration of different components into an HMI, including panels and wireless devices. Another aspect is the design of the control room itself, including the decisions on which stations and equipment are adjacent. Fiset includes operating procedures in the HMI, and discusses their development and validation. An appendix provides advice on when to use different components, including large display screens, annunciators, and display techniques.

Many sites can benefit from improved guidance on the development and improvement of the operator interface. Fiset provides a process for HMI design, but very little in the way of display techniques themselves. Human-Machine Interface Design for Process Control Applications is a 20,000 ft view of HMI design. Great Start - Story didn't really develop became boring

3.5 Stars. The story started out great - the scene setting, the background on the H & h - built on the first book on the series. But somewhere around Chapter 6 or so - the storyline started its decline. SPOILER - I thought the reaction of the Ujal way over the top given she rescued the baby - then exile for both? what? I still thought the story had tons of potential but frankly the scenes became repetitive & boring. The characters didn't pull me in any further - they didn't seem to develop - the action scenes felt like they'd been 'stuck' in. I still have high hopes for the series but this book that had such promise was more of a stepping stone to the next one (I hope).

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion. Taulan was also injured in the explosion that almost cost Jarek(War Master) from book 1 his wings. Unfortunately, for Taulan his wings were actually destroyed due to acid being thrown onto his back and scarring and eating away at his flesh. Taulan feels he is unworthy and wants to return home to Preor in disgrace (to take his final flight). Taulan remained on Earth with Jarek, Melissa, Tave, Rina, Erun, etc. He was out on the beach with baby Theresa when the child sprinted toward the water. Taulan could not go after the child because of his Preor nature.
Lana Coburn met a man that ultimately destroyed her life, she is now on the run and in hiding. She arrives at UST-Ujal Station Tau for a job interview. Lana has paid a large amount of money for a new identity and hopes this job allows for a fresh start. Lana is currently living out of her car and barely has any possessions or money to eat. Her interview is running a bit late and she is told to walk the beach to wait for Charlotte. During her walk she spots Taulan and Theresa, she spots Theresa running full tilt toward the water and Taulan just standing there watching. Lana jumps into the water after Theresa yells for help. She does a good deed, then she is detained by the Ujal becuase they know she lied about her identity and is then accused of trying to abduct Theresa. While all this was going down, Taulan experiences "the Knowing" Lana is his mate and she is being threatened and kept from him. Not good. Taulan completely loses it and they are both tossed into cells. Taulan verbally claims Lana to keep her from any punishment the Ujal can inflict on her. They are then put onto the Preor ship and Jarek relinquishes his title as War Master to Taulan. Then the real fun begins. This new couple must grow together as a couple, face enemies and attack. Lana has to open up about her abusive past. And Taulan must face challenges to his new position.

A Dragon Warrior And His Mate

Once again Erin Tate has written an amazing book. Taulan, his wings destroyed during a fight with other Preor warriors who want to stop human females from mating with Preor warriors, he thinks his life is over. Lana is running from an Ex who was so abusive that she changed her name and was going to get a job with the Ujal to take care of younglings. Walking on the beach Lana sees a tiny girl racing to the ocean waves, the male with her not going after her. Jumping into action Lana is able to get to the little girl and brings her to safety. However, getting caught with fake ID by the Ujal and having a little princess in her arms is a fast track to BIG trouble. Lana is tossed into an interrogation cell. Taulan is going to get to his mate even though the Ujal are determined that she is going to answer all their questions.

Since I am a softee, I was hoping that somehow love would re-grow dragon wings. That is why Erin is the writer and I can just read, she knows what will work in a story.... still I do wish that somehow Taulan will get his wings back

I have owned The first edition and love it so much that I had to purchase the second edition; This is with out a doubt the best in the subject, It is complete with all Classifications, Tables covering: Ignition Point of materials, Flammable Specs.- current and applicable codes.

Not a book for experienced engineers, just for beginners.

The book repeats what is already known about standards; in my opinion these type of books must not be for beginners, the title suggest a content specialized, a result of the author experience, not a copy of the NEC with a few comments; sorry but I am disappointed.

About the Author
John J. Macionis (pronounced "ma-SHOW-nis") was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.

His publications are wide-ranging, focusing on community life in the United States, interpersonal intimacy in families, effective teaching, humor, new information technology, and the importance of global education. In addition to authoring this #1 best-seller, Macionis has also written "Society: The Basics," the #1 most popular paperback text in the field, now in its ninth edition. He collaborates on international editions of the texts: "Sociology: Canadian Edition; Society: The Basics, Canadian Edition; "and "Sociology: A Global Introduction." "Sociology" is also available for high school students and in various foreign-language editions. In addition, Macionis and Nijole V. Benokraitis have edited the best-selling anthology "Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology," also available in a Canadian edition.
